    Understanding What Employers Really Want

Job postings are more than a list of requirements—they're roadmaps to interview success. Learning to decode them gives you a significant competitive advantage.

The Anatomy of a Job Posting

Every job posting contains critical clues about what matters most to the employer. Pay attention to: order of requirements (what's listed first matters most), repeated keywords and phrases, required vs. preferred qualifications, and the company culture signals in the description.

    Identifying Key Qualifications

Required Qualifications: These are non-negotiable. If you don't meet these, reconsider applying.

Preferred Qualifications: These are "nice to have" but not dealbreakers. Apply even if you don't meet all of them.

Hidden Qualifications: Look for skills implied by responsibilities, even if not explicitly stated.

    Keyword Analysis

Create a spreadsheet of keywords from the posting. Common categories include: technical skills, soft skills, certifications/education, industry-specific terms, and action verbs describing responsibilities.

    Understanding Job Titles

Job titles vary across industries and companies. Research: what this title typically means in the industry, how it compares to your current/previous title, and what level of experience is typically expected.

    Red Flags to Watch For

    • Unrealistic combination of skills for the salary range
    • Vague job descriptions with no clear responsibilities
    • Overemphasis on "wearing many hats" or "other duties as assigned"
    • Requirements that suggest they're looking for multiple roles in one

    How to Use This Analysis

Your keyword analysis becomes the foundation for your resume, cover letter, and interview preparation. Match your experience to their language and priorities. Prepare examples that demonstrate each key qualification.
